Applied Physics Program

Applied Physics
Science of everyday living

Physics, once called natural philosophy deals with the fundamental laws of nature. Its major divisions are mechanics, heat and thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, wave motion , sound, optics and modern physics.

Applied Physics applies these laws to real life situations and to every aspect of human activity. It bridges the gap between laboratory and practice by applying the theoretical aspects of physics to the broad realm of practical problems in engineering, science and industry.

Program Overview

The BS Applied Physics program at UST is intended for students who are deeply interested in physics and at the same time are fascinated by the interrelation of physics problems and technological development. It is a four- year course designed to:

  • Provide the students with a thorough knowledge of basic Physics principles backed with a strong foundation in mathematics, electronics and computer technology
  • Equip the students with the necessary skills and knowledge to design, develop and use appropriate and effective instruments.

The curriculum conforms with the requirements of the CHED Technical Panel for Pure and Applied Physics.

Major course requirements are on the job training of 200 hours during summer prior to 4th year and a thesis.

Facilities

There are three airconditioned and fully equipped laboratories in Physics at the College of Science: General Physics lab, Electronics and Instrumentation lab, and higher Physics. In addition to these, UST boasts of the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex facilities where senior Applied Physics students conduct their experiments in their thesis courses.

Career Opportunities

A bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics can be the start of a rewarding career. This program offers doors to job opportunities in different fields as follows:

Research

Graduates may be employed as researchers in high tech laboratories both in private and government -owned laboratories.

Teaching

Graduates may become instructors in the secondary and tertiary levels.

Advanced Studies

A BS degree in Applied Physics also provides the necessary background for graduate study in physics or applied physics. It may serve as a preparatory course to medicine.

Development and Design

Work in this area utilizes both basic and applied research to improve existing products, processes and instruments to develop new ones.

Management and other areas

Physicists can be found in a wide variety of areas such as research administration, university administration, science reporting, technical management, production and marketing and in such fields as metallurgy, pharmaceutical, electronics, semiconductor, food processing and packaging, health and radiation safety, pollution control, computer technology, and financial services.

Other graduates who opt to pursue a master’s degree in Medical Physics may establish a career in hospitals planning radiation treatment especially for cancer patients as well overseeing imaging facilities.

The Physics teaching staff is composed of

  • Competent masters and doctoral degree holders obtained from reputable universities here and abroad
  • Active officers and members of national as well as international professional organizations
  • Involved affiliates of some government and private institutions likes the Department of Health and the Benavides Cancer Institute
  • Dedicated mentors and academic adviser of award winning researches of students
  • Highly innovative researchers
  • Educators with a "heart for the students
