Dela Cruz invited in the first ASEAN SLP in Thailand
The National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand in cooperation with the Global Young Academy recently initiated the first ASEAN Science Leadership Programme (SLP). Inspired by the Africa Science Leadership Programme, the ASEAN SLP brought together 18 participants (fellows) from six countries in Southeast Asia – Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. One of them is Prof. Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat., a faculty member of the UST Department of Biological Sciences.
Composed mainly of mid-career ASEAN academics, the programme assisted the fellows in learning science leadership and communication in order to provide the fellows with skills to think of solutions to problems and concerns that are common to both ASEAN and the global scientific community.
The four-day seminar-workshop held June 09-12, 2016 in Bangsean, Thailand also trained and encouraged the participants to develop inter-connected and inter-disciplinary approach to various scientific issues and concerns of the region.
“I was fortunate to be chosen as one of the two Filipino young scientists, together with Dr. Aimee-Lyn Barrion-Dupo of the University of the Philippines – Los Baños, to participate in this unique science leadership programme,” said dela Cruz. He added that his participation in the said event inspired him to devise a programme which aims to promote science (science communication & engagement) through a seminar that will benefit the next generation of scientists. Holding an event that links science and art is also considered because according to him, that is basically the main focus of his proposed project, a part of the training activities.
