TEAM MOM Goes to Samar & Leyte

FBS groupTeacher Enrichment Activity in Microbiology: Mentoring Our Mentors (TEAM MOM), the Fungal Biodiversity and Systematics (FBS) group of UST RCNAS conducted a two-day training for 30 teachers from 23 high schools in the provinces of Samar and Leyte on April 17-18, 2015.

Hosted by the Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus (PSHS-EVC) in Palo, Leyte, Prof. Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, professor of microbiology and currently the chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science and the Graduate School, and a senior faculty researcher at the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences (RCNAS), together with his graduate advisee, Mr. Carlo Chris S. Apurillo, MSc in Microbiology student at the UST Graduate School and a special science teacher I at PSHS-EVC, taught the participants aseptic techniques, the proper way of culturing microorganisms and assay for antimicrobial activities. The two-day event likewise included a training on conducting and presenting research where participants eagerly presented their own research projects conceptualized during the training session.

This outreach activity was made possible through the support of Ms. Janet Morata-Fuentes, Special Science Teacher IV and Assistant for Special Projects at PSHS-EVC.

TEAM MOM, since its conceptualization, has gone places: from the schools in Metro Manila to Nueva Vizcaya in the north, to the Bicol Region in the south of Luzon, and now Samar and Leyte, which is the second training workshop conducted by the group this year. This once again shows how Thomasian educators give life to three C’s: competence, compassion, and commitment.
