Thomasian Fulbright Fellows at Lincoln Memorial University, Tennessee

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in Harrogate, Tennessee through the efforts of Dr. Adam W. Rollins, an assistant professor of LMU, hosted two Fulbright fellows from October 25-30, 2011. Dr. Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, a faculty member of the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science, University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines and Dr. Hanh Thi My Tran, a faculty member of the Ho Chi Minh International University, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, gave lectures to undergraduate students at the auditorium of the Abraham Lincoln Museum in LMU.

Dr. dela Cruz talked about the Philippines, its biodiversity and his research on Philippine myxomycetes (slime molds). Dr. Tran, on the other hand, presented the myxomycetes from Thailand and its potential application as sources of biofuels. Both Fulbright fellows also had an opportunity to meet faculty members and students of the Department of Biological Sciences of LMU and shared their respective research experiences.

During the six-day visit, Dr. dela Cruz and Dr. Tran joined Dr. Rollins in conducting some of his field works. They visited the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which is home to more than 2,000 species of plants, animals and other organisms. The park is also the most visited national park in the US and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dr. dela Cruz and Dr. Tran are Fulbright fellows at the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Arkansas under the supervision of the world-renowned myxomycete expert, Prof. Dr. Steven L. Stephenson. Dr. Stephenson was also a recipient of Fulbright Fellowship in India. This endeavour is supported by the Occasional Lecturers Fund given by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
