IPB scientist visits UST

Dr. Kustiriayah Tarman, professor and researcher at the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, Bogor Agricultural University or Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Indonesia visited UST from October 26 to 29, 2014. Dr. Tarman's visit to UST is part of her research collaborative activities with Dr. Thomas Edison dela Cruz, professor of microbiology at the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science and faculty researcher at the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

Dela Cruz and Tarman are working on a joint research project which aims to assess and compare the species composition of fungal endophytes associated with mangroves in Indonesia and the Philippines. The two researchers collected and isolated mangrove fungal endophytes from Zamboanga in the Philippines and from Makasaar, South Sulawesi in Indonesia. The project looks at sea current as a factor that can bring fungal spores from one site to another as evident by their colonization of the host plants found in the area. This research endeavor is supported by a grant from the Southeast Asian Ministry of Education Organization – Center for Tropical Biology (SEAMEO-BIOTROP).

As part of Tarman's research visit, she also met with graduate students of the Fungal Biodiversity and Systematics group as well as with the faculty members of the Department of Biological Sciences for exchanges of scientific ideas and planning for future research activities. She likewise visited key offices in the university including a discussion with the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof. Maribel Nonato, PhD, on future research endeavor between IPB and UST. IPB is the leading agricultural university in Indonesia. TEDC
